Great Wall. In c. 220 B.C., under Qin Shi Huang, the first Chinese emperor ever, sections of earlier fortifications were joined together to form a united defense system against invasions from the north. Construction continued up to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), when the Great Wall became the world's largest military structure. The great Wall is the world's longest manmade structure approximately 6,400 km (4,000 miles) long. The Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
With a history of more than 2000 years, many sections of the great wall are now in ruins or entirely disappeared due to natural deterioration or destruction by people. However, it is still one of the most popular attractions on the planet for its architectural grandeur and historical significance.
The Great Wall we can see today was mostly built during the Ming Dynasty, an era of tremendous construction. It starts from Shanhaiguan Pass in the east, right facing the surging Pacific Ocean, to Jiayuguan Pass in the west in the desolated Gobi desert.

Massive wall and mountains, wide open view. Jinshanling and Simatai are actually 2 sections on 1 continuous piece of Great Wall, about 20 kilometers (12 miles). This part of the Great Wall has some of the most dramatic angles and the least restored portions in the area. The Great Wall will show you its real face with many original features. Some walls and towers are still standing there after hundreds of years, while some collapsed onto the bottom of the wall, rocks, limestone, and broken brick lying silently; very often you can see half tower collapsed, while the other half still standing in the wind. You can visit either Jinshanling, or Simatai, or, if you like, spend 1 day hiking from 1 to the other (10 km in 4-5 hours), since it is the most popular Great Wall Hiking route in China.
